HAS THE MET GALA LOST ITS PRESTIGE? THE LEAKED GUEST LIST SUGGESTS SO
Met Gala 2021’s leaked guest list may disappoint. After its absence last year, the long-awaited return of the Met Gala is only weeks away. Fans of the event are eager to see their favourite celebrities take to the carpet to display their avant-garde and creative outfits. But over the past few weeks, ‘leaked’ information regarding the prestigious event has disappointed some people due to its attendees list and seating arrangements. This has led to the questioning of whether the Met Gala has lost its luster and damaged its high profile celebrity status. The Met Gala 2021’s leaked guest list is certainly suggesting it will be less than what it once was.
WHAT IS THE MET GALA AND WHY THE GUEST LIST MATTERS
The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala, usually taking place in May, which aims to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute New York City. Hosted by Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, each year plays host to a new theme which is celebrated by that year’s Costume Institute Exhibition and sets the tone for the evenings dress code. Celebrities attending are expected to honour the theme, whether it’s literal or theirs/the designers interpretation. This year’s theme focuses on American fashion ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’.
This major fashion event has been around since 1948 and has earned the title as the most exclusive Hollywood party; spurring on this illusion, little photography is allowed inside.
I’M NOT MAD, JUST DISAPPOINTED
So, what has caused an uproar for the event? Well with the acclaimed ‘leaked’ guest-list and table seating, people including myself aren’t too pleased with the sheer amount of internet personalities that might be attending. These include the D’Amelio sisters, Addison Rae, Emma Chamberlain and James Charles to name a few.
There are a few reasons why people are disappointed by this decision. The first being that the Met Gala is known to be a difficult event to be invited to. Invites tend to go out to Hollywood stars not TikTokers. Some believe the internet stars aren’t famous enough nor deserving to earn a spot. People have even gone to compare the list to the Kids Choice Awards.
Many have vocalised their disbelief after the Youtuber James Charles reached the list again. This is because not only did he attend in a Coachella suitable outfit last time but because he’s admitted to sexting underaged boys, with alleged evidence that he still continues to.
Another issue people had was that they were being seated next to stars such as Beyoncé, Naomi Campbell and Idris Alba. Drawing on the fact that the internet stars are not on the same level as the other attendees and will have little to discuss.
I’m going to have to agree with the majority here because I enjoy watching the event for the fashion, and I don’t see them turning out extravagant looks. They’re not iconic, they’re annoying – and I think the inclusion of them makes the Met Gala tacky. Just like Cannes Film Festival, there’s an element of opulence and sophistication about it, and I think the inclusion of internet personalities will extinguish this.
IS THE MET GALA EVOLVING OR DEVOLVING?
The inclusion of such personalities is most likely due to the attempt to drive an interest amongst a younger audience to the event for the future. However, I believe they’re going the wrong way about it. I think Emma Chamberlain is the only deserving person to attend as she’s influenced the fashion market greatly and collaborated with major brands for campaigns etc. This is the route they need to follow. The inclusion of social media fashion influencers allows the event to feel more current whilst keeping in tone with its fashion etiquette.
Some people who have an insight into the event have voiced their disappointment regarding the alleged guestlist, saying that people have been put off going. However, I do think that the reason why so many influencers have allegedly been invited is because in some way it’s not the ‘real’ Met Gala. They may be just fillers for celebrities that didn’t want to or couldn’t attended due to Covid. Another reason for why so many are attending is due to Facebook and Instagram buying tables for the event, allowing them to invite their most popular online personalities.
But what does this all mean for the future of the Met Gala? Has it lost its touch and significance? Honestly, I don’t think so. I believe this is just a blip for the event due to the uncertainty and restrictions of Covid-19. I think this year’s carpet may be underwhelming but we can always place our trust in Rihanna and Zendaya to please the crowds. If we fast forward to May 2022, I think we’ll once again see all the usual stars back on the carpet and have an absence of internet personalities – especially after such a severe backlash.
