WHO IS OPAL LEE?
Who is Opal Lee you say? Well for some who’ve known what she’s been up to for about seventy five years she’s a legend. She’s a powerhouse and fighter. She’s got grit and tenacity that doesn’t seem to quit.
And she is the living embodiment of living a life full of mean and definitive purpose. This is how she has blazed a trail of passion and glory fighting for justice for more than 70 years. Nope. Not a typo. Seventy Y-E-A-R-S! Wow.
Opal Lee is a retired teacher,
Opal Lee is an American retired teacher, counselor, and activist. She lead the movement to make Juneteenth a federally-recognized holiday.
She has even been called the “grandmother of Juneteenth”.
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed Senate Bill S. 475, making Juneteenth a federal holiday. The 11th federal holiday to be precise.
ACTIVIST OPAL LEE’S MORE THAN SEVEN DECADES OF ACTIVISM
At 94 Opal seems to have little hangups and far greater ambitions to keep on with her activism. She said, “So I’ll keep on walking, I’ll keep on talking, to make this a better place for all of us to live.”
